Keep Up to Date With Our Water Supply Updates

-

By now most people will be aware that Tararua District is experiencing drought-like conditions to a greater or lesser extent at present. The current dry conditions have lowered water levels in our rivers to unprecedented levels and this is impacting Councils ability to supply water, particularly in Dannevirke. The Tamaki River, where Dannevirke draws its water supply from, is at its lowest level since records began in 1965 and continues to drop.

The current event is a reminder to us all that water is a finite resource and our collective attitudes need to change as the world begins to understand the increasing impacts of climate change. Water conservation needs to become part of everyday life and there are many simple ways to make an immediate impact.

At the time of writing, the entire district is operating under a total hosing ban. While all towns face the potential risk of escalated restrictions if the dry conditions continue, Dannevirke and Norsewood face the imminent risk of escalation to nEssential Use Onlyo. Essential use means no outside with usage restricted to drinking, cooking and personal hygiene like showers and washing clothes.

Council is continuously monitoring water levels in all towns and will keep residents informed as conditions change.

For up to date information on water restrictions please visit the Council website at www.tararuadc.govt.nz/water and/or like the Council Facebook page. Council would like to thank residents for their water conservation efforts to date as these are making a noticeable difference. However, it is important we continue these efforts given there is no relief to the dry weather in the forecast.
