Horse trek Akitio fundraiser fun for all

- By DAVE MURDOCH

What better on a lovely autumn day than to walk, ride or run the coastal hills of Akitio, taking in East Coast fresh air.

On Saturday March 14 Akitio residents are keen to raise money for their Community Centre in their biennial fundraiser.

The Akitio Community Centre is having its walk/ run / guided horse trek

— a fun day out, travelling over two adjoining coastal stations, Marainanga and Moanaroa, climbing to the wellknown Kereru¯ trig offering views on the way from its peak at 343m above sea level.

The terrain is varied with some flat to medium and steep hill climbs. Your work is well rewarded with vistas to Cape Turnagain, Castle Point, the ranges and the ocean. The tracks are good farm tracks.

There are two walk options —10km and 13km — and two run options — 13km and 21km. The walkers and runners start at the Akitio Community Centre from 9.30am and will be staggered.

The course will be clearly marked with marshals posted at regular intervals, three water refill stations at Kereru¯ Trig, Blue Gums and Basin Yards.

The guided horse trek is new since 2018 and will take three to four hours depending on the weather. It will cover different landscapes on Marainanga and Moanaroa Stations and transport is available down to the Akitio Community Centre for the prize-giving. Bring your own horse.

Cellphone coverage is pretty good on the course and a contact number is available in case of emergency, side-bysides with RTs to help participants if there is a need.
