Challenging month for floral art group
In extremely challenging times for gardeners and floral artists due to the drought, the Dannevirke Floral Art Group found enough flowers to reflect the theme of Art Deco designs set for its February meeting which doubled as its AGM.
The leadership of 2019 was re-elected, Joy Charmley as president, Christine Littlejohn as secretary and Linda Barnett as treasurer with a good committee and several new and prospective members in attendance.
The club had had an enjoyable visit and lunch in Joy Murdoch’s garden during January, thankfully before watering restrictions were in force.
Finding blooms was challenging for the Art Deco theme, one member saying she chose the flowers she was going to use and watered only them while the others withered in the heat and dryness.
Nevertheless the Rawhiti Lodge had some lovely colour and as usual every design was different. 2019 was a hectic year for the group, every month having a style of design to try and a number of competitions to enter on a local, regional and national scale.
Dannevirke won the competition when it hosted the Area Day for Horowhenua, Wanganui and
Manawatu¯ clubs in April, put entries into the FASNZ National Designer of the Year in May, Heather Monk representing Manawatu¯ and Linda Barnett being its convener and presented an amazing exhibition for the Spring Festival in October called “After Five” which was well received by the public.
The club is already planning its next Spring Festival exhibition. Let’s hope it has rained by then!
■ The club meets in the Rawhiti Lodge every last Tuesday in the month usually at 11am. New comers are most welcome. Contact Linda Barnett (06 374 8185) or Christine Littlejohn (06 374 8687).
