Counting on bags of donations for hungry
Most households throughout the Tararua and the North Island received a paper bag in their mail box with the invitation to take it to their local New World store and buy goods to be donated to a foodbank in their neighbourhood.
It is a Foodstuffs initiative to help struggling foodbanks feed needy families through winter.
Dannevirke proprietor Bruce Jenkins says the monthlong June programme was hugely successful last year.
He said New World stores will each contribute to top up the total donations by a combined $250,000 in the North Island.
He thinks there are many residents who can afford to fill or partly fill a bag and already
the trolley waiting at the end of the checkout has had to be regularly emptied.
If you have not received a bag you can pick one up as you enter the store.
