Spoiled for choice at Flooring Design Dannevirke

- By Steve Carle

Flooring Design Dannevirke's new owner, Louisa Burns, has been buying houses to renovate and sell, for nearly 20 years. She has spent the last five years in the flooring business, learning all the ins and outs of the trade.

When the Dannevirke business came up for sale, Louisa was a current staff member so she stepped up and decided to take over the ownership, to be working in the local community. Her franchise extends from Norsewood out to the coast Herbertville and Akitio, down to Pahiatua - the whole Tararua District.

“Flooring is a finishing service/product, once your decorating has been done, that's when we come in and put the flooring in,” says Louisa. “With my vast experience, I can usually tell you what you're going to need to do, from start to finish. We're here to help, from moving furniture, all the way through to helping you get that flooring job done.

“We try to keep it nice and easy for everybody, we check in a couple of days before and ask if you are ready or need some help, how is the furniture move going? It's a big thing, especially when you're installing new flooring throughout a whole house.

“We can break it down into a few days, doing the bedrooms first. Then we'll come in and do your lounge and hallway, so you can keep everything inside. Not everyone has a carport or garage to store their furniture in. For the other areas with hard flooring or vinyl to be installed, we'll do all the prep work, getting floors level and smoothing everything out to make a perfect base.” she said. “You get a full warranty with your product. We also do commercial work – using more hardy, long-lasting products like carpet tiles and commercial vinyls.

“We have many well-known brands, such as: Robert Malcolm, Godfrey Hirst, and Feltex, which manufacture brilliant New Zealand products. Belgotex is another great brand that makes a stain-proof carpet. I've put red wine and beetroot juice on it as a test. You remove the stain with equal parts water and bleach and the stain lifts straight out. We recommend this carpet to all our customers that have children and pets.

Vinyl planking

“Vinyl planking is very popular - if you ever damage the floor in your kitchen, for instancedropping iodine or something that will stain the planking,- you're only picking up one or two planks, not replacing the whole floor. “Vinyl planking has a fibreglass coating on it, it's a lot stronger than classic vinyl, which is a softer sheet. It's completely glued down, and completely water resistant.

“You can choose the way you want to lay it. The big trend now is geometric patterns - we can do herringbone patterns to get that special look. “We can customise the design to your taste and what you are doing with the rest of the house. Our focus is to make your floors different to your neighbour's.

Carpet

“We try to recommend wool, we're New Zealanders living in farming areas and love to support the

community. Wool is hypoallergenic, it keeps you nice and warm. It's quite a premium product. It's also fire resistant and water-resistant - you won't get that with nylon.

Nylon

“Nylon is stain-resistant and colour-fixed, it's not going to fade if have large sunny areas or big windows. That's why we give a free measure and a quote. We want people to have the right product for their homes and get the job done correctly the first time.

Floating floor Systems

“A floating floor system is available, suitable for D.I.Y.ers, which clips together, but is not glued down. A cut is made in the skirting boards to allow them to move with the house. This is necessary as the boards do expand and contract with change of temperature in the home.

Wood floors

“There are natural wood floors available - made from real timber - or laminates which are waterresistant and have a very attractive look to them.
