Great school term one packed with activities

Omicron didn’t stop Norsewood & Districts School students

- Angela McQuarrie Principal

Where do you start with a term like no other? Norsewood & Districts School faced the Omicron challenge this term just like every other school in the area, with resilience, hard work and adaptability. Our students proved how versatile they were as they faced each day with smiles on their faces but we did not let Covid stop us having a great term.

Our swimming pool was up and running this year and what a fantastic asset to have. Students swam every day until the weather turned cooler and this made a notable difference with their water confidence and skills. Years 3-8 also had a couple of swimming lessons at Wai Splash.

Once swimming finished we went back to whole school morning fitness to keep our tamariki moving.

We are fortunate to have a working school garden that students help care for and reap the benefits of fresh vegetables that are used for our school lunches and cooking.

Early in the term our seniors were able to attend the opening of Te Miro Wananga Nursery. Our school has a partnership with Te Miro Farm that sees us visit the farm to plant natives on the awa, with the help of Massey University scientists test the water and now we can propagate seeds and grow natives from scratch. Great experience for all students.

Even with all the restrictions we have managed to have some visitors this term. Harold from Life Education came to teach our tamariki how to deal with emotions and wellbeing.

His visit coincided with the dental

nurses who were also spending a couple of weeks at the school. Covid had disrupted their visits for the last couple of years so it was great to have all our students’ teeth checked.

We also had a visit from Shaz Dagg from Parafit who was an inspiration to everyone about exercising with a disability. The wheelchair basketball was a hit as was the student versus teachers basketball game.

This term our students have been awarded GREAT cards. These are cards given to a student when they are showing one of our values Give it a go, Respect, Excellence, Attitude or Teamwork. All students from youngest to oldest are really proud to get one of these, especially with house points attached, and with the support from Duffy books we can do a draw for a book each week.

That was our term one in review. There were many more exciting experiences over our term and our students continue to amaze us with their resilience. We can’t wait for term two.
