Countdown to big Ross Shield week

- Dave Murdoch

Dannevirke is hosting the Ross Shield on October 3, which also coincides with Rugby Park’s 100 years’ celebration.

Five teams of the Hawke’s Bay’s elite senior primary school rugby players will arrive on Monday, October 3, to compete with the locals for the famous trophy.

The tournament starts with a Parade down High St on Tuesday morning at 10am with an official welcome at the Town Hall at 10.30am including the return of Trophies and presentation of Balls to Team Captains.

There will be three games per day concluding with the finals on Saturday: Tuesday to Thursday 1pm/2pm/ 3pm, Saturday 11am/12pm/1pm.

Food and drinks will be available at the grounds each day.

The tournament committee is doing a fantastic job of organising the week but there is an urgent need for billets because all teams are staying in town for the week.

Please contact chairman Bevan Ellison on 021 664 657 if you can help with the billeting.

There will be activities across the week for players and each evening the games will be shown on the big screen after the close of play alternating between the Mangatera (Tuesday and Thursday) and Merrylees (Wednesday and Friday) Hotels.

Dannevirke’s Ross Shield Team’s preparation has been great and we are looking forward to seeing the home team in action. Ross Shield capping is at The Hub at 6pm on September 21.

It’s always a spectacle having a home tournament and we would love to see Rugby Park packed out.

The Saturday of the last tournament we hosted (2016) saw thousands attend!

We have a reputation for bringing something special to the tournament when we host it.
