Station tunes in for prostate cancer

Radio songathon and sausage sizzle to raise funds for Blue September

- Dave Murdoch

On Saturday, September 24, Gary on Dannevirke Radio 107 FM will not be playing his normal Hits of the Sixties and instead will be choosing any song with blue in the title as part of a songathon.

Between 8am and noon he will be playing about 60 songs all sponsored by businesses and individuals to raise money and awareness to fight prostate cancer because this month has been named Blue September.

In addition, down in Rangitane Square others will be running a sausage sizzle fundraiser with raffles and merchandise for sale.

Gary is motivated particularly because his brother died from it 14 months ago.

More than 4000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year and 650 will die from it. It is the second most diagnosed cancer in men after skin cancer and the third highest cause of death from cancer in men after lung and bowel cancer in NZ. One in eight will be diagnosed with it in their lifetime but it can be treated if caught early enough.

Mates, fathers, sons, brothers, grandfathers — if you haven’t been directly affected by prostate cancer, you’re bound to know someone who has.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand (PCFNZ) is committed to being the voice of more than 42,000 men living with the disease in New Zealand advocating on their behalf for better health outcomes today and for future generations.

This year, Blue September hopes to raise in excess of $1 million in much needed funds, every cent of which goes toward providing essential wrap-around support services for men and their families living with prostate cancer.

They say, “We are very proud of what we collectively accomplish during Blue September and we couldn’t do it without you. Every effort, every activity, every dollar, every cent, however small, helps us to improve the health outcomes of Kiwi men.”
