Lights, camera action for theatre’s new management

Latest screenings draw good audiences

- Dave Murdoch

Acrowd of mostly elderly attended the screening of Downton Abbey on Tuesday morning in the Dannevirke Regent Theatre and loved it.

This is all part of the new management’s plans to make movie-going in Dannevirke a regular experience.

Resurrected by Movie Fest, which hired the local theatre nearly a year ago, now a new local management team called Dannevirke Regent Cinema Inc. has taken over the lease and is doing its best to build on the great efforts of its predecessor in encouraging locals to come out to watch a movie in town.

New president Trevor Moore says it was always Movie Fest’s plan to hand over to locals so it was “by the community for the community”.

He said he has a committee of 15 volunteers with Clare Green as secretary and Amy Mulinder as treasurer, plus numerous others to help run the projector and Candy Bar and has a bunch of keen businesses to support the enterprise.

Dannevirke’s public has begun to

patronise the theatre in increasing numbers with some very good audiences for some of the latest showings.

With a new distributor, the business has been able to access more recent movies, the first Elvis released this year attracting great houses. More recent movies like Top Gun Maverick, Lost City and Operation Mincemeat are due in the next week or two with kids’ favourites Sonic 2 and The Bad Guys coming too.

Management is trying to cater for

specific groups like the elderly every second Tuesday morning and in the last holidays the Ross Shield players, 130 of whom packed the theatre to watch Space Jams.

The aim is to make it more affordable for families.

Being a community theatre, the new management would like locals to increasingly participate. They are offering to show business advertisements on the big screen and are keen to receive other help.

The big-ticket item on the agenda is a new projector to show the latest movies — a big price at $80,000 but worth it.
