Special NZ film event joins retro classics a T Pahiatua cinema

-

New releases, big events, and a lot of retro titles are coming to Pahiatua’s big screen in November beginning with acclaimed NZ director Costa Botes’ latest film, When the Cows Come Home.

Costa will join the audience in Pahiatua for opening night on November 4, and Derrick Sims will moderate a Q&A after the programme. Cows is the story of Andrew Johnstone, a Cambridge artist and journalist whose tragedy and troubles left him in an awful place. But two cows, Maggie and Tilly, help pull Johnstone out of his rut and teach him to live in the moment. Hear from the man, his family, and his friends as they chronicle the unique life Andrew has lived as well as his ever-evolving philosophy around art, relationships, mental health, farming, and more. Screenings end on November 16.

Also opening on the 4th is Walt Disney’s Frozen. Like Moana and The Lion King before it, this smash hit is getting the te reo Ma¯ ori treatment. The dialogue and songs have all been re-recorded with a new cast of voice actors from New Zealand. Bring your kids, let them hear and practise their te reo Ma¯ ori, and enjoy this picture on the big screen all over again!

If horror is your thing (and even if it’s not — live a little), the delightfully dark and terribly terrifying Barbarian comes to town on the 5th. Georgina Campbell (Black Mirror), Bill Skarsgard (It), and Justin Long (Jeepers Creepers) star in a Twilight Zonetype story that twists and turns and surprises time after time. The less you know going in, the better. Give it a go in our very limited run, and let’s make late night horror films a thing — again!

On November 11 and 12, travel back to 1984 when James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Linda Hamilton

brought Terminators into the pop culture zeitgeist. The Regent will screen a restoration of the original Terminator, and then we’ll be back the following day for the superior sequel, Terminator 2: Judgement Day. See and hear these exciting, popcorn classics on the big screen as they were meant to be experienced.

NZ investigative journalist David

Farrier’s latest feather-ruffler, Mister Organ, opens on November 18. This time around, the Dark Tourist and Tickled filmmaker tackles Michael Organ — a strange and mysterious man caught clamping cars at an Auckland antique store. Soon after Farrier’s investigation starts, the sometimes funny but always shocking experience quickly spirals deeper and

Due to space sharing with the rep society, the cinema schedule gets unique mid-month with morning shows. First up is A Morning with Charlie Brown , a fun compilation of three Peanuts classics, restored in glorious 4K and hosted by Tararua Cinematheque. Join Charlie, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty and more as they search for the giant pumpkin, have a friendly Thanksgiving feast, and more. There will be an intermission, and we will offer our drink/popcorn/icecream special as we do during school holidays. This is a one-morning-only event on Saturday, November 19, so don’t miss out.

Disney’s latest release, Strange World, will open on November 24. The animated film follows a legendary, adventurous family who must get over their differences or fail in their treacherous interplanetary mission. It’s a pulpy picture with a dash of Jules Verne-like science fiction, and it stars the voice talents of Jake Gyllenhaal, Lucy Liu and Dennis Quaid. We will have afternoon matinees, as well as a 10.30am BYO Baby show on November 30.

Tararua Cinematheque caps the month with a celebration of The Godfather, the greatest gangster movie ever made and arguably the greatest film ever produced. Brando, Pacino, Keaton, Duval, Caan, Cazale and more light up the screen as Francis Ford Coppola directs them and this picture to perfection. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards and winner of Best Picture, this is a must-see movie and there’s no better way than on our big screen.

On December 3, there’s a special, morning screening of Will Ferrell’s Elf (2003). This coincides with the Explore Pahiatua Christmas Parade, so join us that morning for a holiday-fuelled weekend.
