Most of us have had a go at table tennis (ping pong) in our time and have had a great time. Sadly most of us have also given it away due to a lack of leisure time or fitness.

This is precisely the time when we should keep it going and since lockdown a lot of people have begun to realise that lifestyle should be a much greater consideration in our lives.

Is it too late too do anything about it? Alan Debrenecy says no and doubles table tennis is just the way to ease yourself into modest recreational sport.

He argues that the health benefits include greater mental alertness, improved reflexes, improved hand/ eye co-ordination, longer concentration and added general fitness particularly from burning calories.

He also says the social benefits almost match the health benefits as the opportunity to get out and meet people, have a laugh, have a chat and even a cuppa can do more for one’s outlook on life than almost anything.

Alan is a relatively recent addition to Dannevirke, moving here with wife Elizabeth several years ago after travelling widely as part of his job both overseas and within NZ.

Everywhere he went he would drop into a tavern or service club where often table tennis was a regular afternoon activity. In no time he had met locals and had a fun time.

Now he wants to set up a Social Table Tennis Club in the Dannevirke Services and Citizen’s Club which has two excellent tables and plenty of space in the upper bar.

It is proposed to run a session of doubles table tennis from 10am-1pm every Thursday. Alan says singles is fun but doubles is easier on the body. He is happy to give players a few tips. The first meeting starts on November 10 and it is open to adults only.
