At the time of print, the five contenders for the National Party’s top role were still competing for support to show why they should be selected to become the next party leader. Tuesday was expected to be the day when the public would find out who would replace Bill English and head National’s campaign into the next election. This should be of particular interest to the Waikato which mainly consists of National MPs and supporters. Only Jamie Strange stands as the elected Labour Party MP, on its list, operating in Hamilton while experienced politician, HaurakiWaikato MPNanaia Mahuta is back in her old role as Local Government Minister for Labour. Taupo MPLouise Upston, whose constituency includes Cambridge, didn’t throw her name in the ring but must be considering her leadership options. Will National opt for a ‘‘generational change’’ as touted by contestant Simon Bridges or will it remain with a leader who represents the status quo for National Party supporters?
