Experience gentle art of judo

- MIKE BAIN

The Cambridge Camkada Judo Club continues its forward momentum this year as it looks for new members.

The club recently joined with other clubs for a weekend camp at Epworth in Maungatautari for some in-depth training from top exponents of the sport including Olympian Chanel Kavanagh.

Club spokesman Matt Gould said the club members benefitted from fellowship with over 100 members from clubs from the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Palmerston North.

Showing the sports appeal, a range of ages between seven and 50 were present. Gould said the camp was designed to give the players more in-depth training and the ability to match their skills against other players from the clubs.

‘‘Kavanagh shared her knowledge and expertise which has made her one of our top judo players,’’ said Gould.

‘‘The youngsters were keen to get into the next competitive situation where they can put these new skills and techniques to use.’’

The Cambridge Club established in 1963 has its judo rooms in McLean Street with its recently installed sprung flooring in place the club is looking for new members to join them on Monday and Wednesday nights.

‘‘In the first few lessons, we teach people how to fall correctly before learning other techniques.

‘‘It’s judo the gentle way,’’ Gould said.
