Canterbury Bride

You're a natural

‘I’m camera shy’ is a phrase heard often, but when it comes to your wedding day, can you really avoid the cameras? Canterbury Bride chats with photographer Emily Hugo about how to make your wedding photography as pain-free as possible.

How can brides and grooms help you help them?

I definitely like to get to know my couples as people and ask them lots of questions about what makes them laugh, what parts of the day they are excited about and if they have any dreamy ideas for their bridal party shoot. I let my clients know that they can 100 per cent be themselves, and I’ll capture them honestly and authentically. I try and blend in as much as possible anyway, as candids are my favourite!

How do you work with couples?

It’s super important to me to make a connection and build a really great relationship, as my couples are trusting me to capture one of the biggest days of their lives. I always make sure I’m available to my clients for any help with planning, vendor recommendations or questions they may have. I have timeline examples available, wedding questionnaires (so I know your bridal crew by name!) and a Pinterest board for what to wear for my engagement and couples sessions.

Posed vs natural?

I would describe my style as documentary with a creative and romantic twist. I think it’s helpful to adjust an arm or a chin angle here and there, but I want my couples to know that I’m here to capture them as they are. The feeling you get from a photograph is just as important as how you see it.

How do you get the best out of your clients?

Sometimes I’ll say something ridiculous and see what reaction I get! I also love shooting lots of movement, this always photographs well as it’s super natural and fun. When you’re in front of the camera it can be so daunting and nerve-wracking, therefore I am 100 per cent my couple’s hype gal – it’s lots of encouragement, woo-hooing and letting you know how incredible you look!

What sort of research should a couple put into the selection of their photographer?

Narrow it down to maybe three photographers you love, grab a coffee with them and see if your personalities mesh well together. Ask for examples of their work. You are trusting us to capture your story, so it’s incredibly important that your creative visions align and you can honestly say you are fans of their work!

What’s the contemporary look for weddings?

I love all the statement florals at the moment as well as the simple and elegant styling. Modern brides aren’t afraid to step out of the box when it comes to fashion, and if you want to wear a bold jumpsuit or a super bohemian piece to your wedding, I say hell yes!
