Come fly with me

Have your photos taken in front of incredible, memorable vistas by including a helicopter in your big day. Canterbury Bride spoke with Caroline Blanchfield from GCH Aviation Group about the magic of taking to the sky.

Why should couples consider a helicopter for their big day?

Helicopters and romance are the perfect pairing – whisking away lovebirds to dream locations, capturing memories to share with friends and family.

Small, intimate weddings are becoming quite the thing these days. A smaller wedding party at the ceremony followed by a bigger party back on the ground means couples have the security that their special day will not have to be postponed due to rules around gatherings and the larger associated costs of a big wedding. Having a helicopter wedding becomes the intimate and special experience that many people crave. It helps to create memories and images that will last forever.

What about the cost?

It really is just a redistribution of the costs from being about the guests to focusing on the couple, their memories, and the images they will have for a lifetime. Loved ones might not be there in person but can share the experience through beautiful video and photographs, and these days streaming is not out of the question with new technology.

Where are some top spots to get married with a view?

The Canterbury region has a myriad of amazing locations limited only by your imagination.

Mount Herbert is one of the highest peaks on Banks Peninsula and a big favourite of couples and photographers, providing wide sweeping views and big sky. Little Port Cooper is also in Lyttelton Harbour and gives an amazing backdrop for ceremonies or images. Little Port Cooper is only accessible by foot, sea or helicopter and only by arrangement on private land. Stunning and very private.

Chest Peak over in the Lees Valley is a stunning location for a ‘white wedding in the snow’ experience. A romantic backdrop is Liebig Dome with breathtaking views to Aoraki/Mount Cook, Mount Tasman and Murchison Valley.

A bit further away is Mount Fyffe in the Kaikōura Ranges which gives amazing vistas across the Kaikōura Peninsula. Kaikōura is becoming a hot spot for weddings because of the natural beauty of the area.

And the best part of taking a helicopter?

It makes an unforgettably powerful arrival at the ceremony or reception! All you need to do is decide where and when you want your helicopter to take you away so you can record those special moments and make memories. And, even better – the heli ride will be the least stressful part of your day!
