Dressing for Your Body Shape

Subtle changes in bridal gown designs come through each season, but dressing for your body type never goes out of fashion, explains Alison van Lent, owner of To Cherish Bridal Boutique.

Subtle changes in bridal gown designs come through each year but dressing for your shape never goes out of fashion

We are a world full of gorgeously-made women from all walks and stages of life. So regardless of being a little on the short side or a little curvier than planned, or a little older than before, finding the right dress all comes down to it being unique for you.

It’s my passion and the passion of all our consultants that no matter what concerns a bride may have about her shape, she deserves to feel and look incredible on her wedding day. The time spent with a bride is so important to listen and hear all requirements and concerns and do all we can to tick those boxes. Experience in this industry has taught us some valuable tips that might help you prepare before you venture into your exciting journey to find the right gown!

Curvy Frame

For the record, nearly 80 per cent of New Zealand women fit into this category so we encourage you to embrace your beautiful shape and be adventurous in trying different styles. The key to a flattering gown is all in the structure inside the gown. Will the cups support your ‘girls’? Is there enough back cover to support the front of the gown to stop it pulling forward? Sometimes it’s just about wearing a good fitted body shapewear, so perhaps come prepared to feel more comfortable in your appointment.

Slender Frame – Larger Cup Size

For some ladies it’s all about putting the ‘girls’ on display, yet others may take a more conservative approach. A trained consultant will help you find the right gown that will ensure you have the following: appropriate cup size so you are held in firmly; enough side coverage to avoid seeing any cheeky side cleavage; or the option of a thicker strap to stop any digging in on your shoulders.

Slender Frame – Small Cup Size

No one needs to know about the extra cups fitted in your prewedding alterations on your gown! These can be sewn into your gown and give just the right amount of support and shape to make you feel and look fuller. Choosing a V neckline can help, but again this is a personal choice and not always necessary.

Older Bride

One of my oldest brides was 83 and it was so fabulous to help her find a gown that made her feel elegant and sophisticated but also suited her requirements. If you are getting the wonderful chance to walk the aisle again then don’t convince yourself that a bridal boutique is just for the ‘young ones’. A good boutique will have many different styles and fabrics and the consultant will be able to help with suggestions if sleeves need to be added or neckline brought up. Embrace your chance to do this how you may not have been able to in the past.

So regardless of shape, size or age, if you are getting married sometime in the future then we would love to see you and help you find that unique gown just for you. With over 270 gown styles in store ranging from size 4 to 30, we can confidently offer an extensive selection from all around the world.

Leave your nerves at the door and be prepared to say Yes to ◌ the Dress!
