Monster trucks bring their tricks to NZ this weekend
Watch out Onehunga – monster truck madness is coming your way.
This weekend some of the world’s biggest and best monster trucks will be creating carnage at Waikaraka Park in the inaugural New Zealand Monster Truck Racing and Freestyle Championships.
Monster trucks of this size and calibre have never been shipped to New Zealand before, organisers say. Contenders include Bigfoot, regarded as the original monster truck that kickstarted the industry 35 years ago.
A flame-throwing jet quad bike, massive fireworks display and freestyle stunts including monster trucks jumping clear over a line of 12 cars will be performed at the competition. One stuntman can even do a double backflip in his truck.
Driver Clive Featherby says this is the ‘‘real deal’’ and will be more than New Zealand crowds have ever seen before.
‘‘It’s just going to shock everyone. It looks like something from Mars, it really does. It’s very hard trying to explain to people who have never seen it before. Until you actually see what they can do you just don’t understand.’’
The event is being organised, run and promoted solely by monster truck drivers and owners.
They want as many people as possible to come and share their passion, Mr Featherby says.
‘‘The people who come to the show are never ever disappointed. They just come away in shock.’’
Tickets are available now or can be purchased at the gate.
