Potholes and a narrow cycleway

- STAFF REPORTER

NARROW CYCLEWAY SAFETY CONCERN

Yes this lane is very narrow and tight and also has the added disadvantage of often being covered in leaves and branches. Having said that it is better than no lane at all. The road code recommends 1.5 m clearance between cyclist and car when passing a bike, and many of these very tight cycle lanes do no allow anything like this.

The complete lack of personal liability for injury to vulnerable road users such as cyclists is also a problem. Overseas drivers are much more courteous as they bear the complete costs of any injury to cyclists, but here with ACC this is not the case.

ACCIDENTS DUE TO POTHOLES

I’m in this situation right now. Due to hitting a pothole along Kahikatea Flat Road on January 1 I’m having to replace two wheels at a cost of nearly $1000. I’m working through it with my insurer but unsure what else, if anything, I could do? My insurer has said that I’ll need to pay the excess, although I have asked them about the Council’s responsibility in this matter.

ADI WICKRAMARATNE One Tree Hill

I had a bad fall due to a very uneven pavement surface where Westhaven meets Curran St. I reported it to AT as soon as I got home on the Thursday morning as it was a real danger to walkers and runners. It was marked by a single cone which kept getting moved presumably by fishermen. It took AT till the following Tuesday to fix it. I know because I checked during the weekend and the cone was not where it needed to be. AT should have dealt with this immediately.

It took me an email and two calls to get it done. I am still getting over the damage to my knee and shoulder.

GARDEN OF HUMANITY

I appreciate the expressed intention of Bob Narev and his wife, given in explanation to my earlier letter in this column in regard to the proposed Remembrance Memorial to be known as the ‘‘Garden of Humanity.’’ When we hear of the on going atrocities and crimes against humanity carried out every day in the Middle East and Africa against civilians particularly children who are subjected to both bodily terror and terror of the mind - one wonders what damage is being done to the young survivors and what the future holds for us all as a consequence. It is also appalling to hear how these crime are rationalised.

I therefore thank Bob and his wife, as survivors themselves, for their broad canvas of concerns about these on going challenges humanity faces.
