Inspirational, free stage show

-

Inspiring people to take positive steps to deal with mental illness is the purpose of a colourful and engaging stage show that will be performed in Henderson in May.

Hosted by Yellow Brick Road, the solo performance is delivered by Rob Mokaraka, a highly acclaimed actor and playwright who suffered undiagnosed depression that resulted in his being shot at by police in an attempted suicide back in 2009.

Shot Bro is the product of Rob’s seven-year journey of healing and self-discovery after that pivotal event.

It is a powerful, raw, authentic one-man show that shares the effects of depression.

Using comedy, heart and truth, Rob takes audiences through his experiences with depression.

The show ends with a short discussion time with the audience.

Yellow Brick Road (formerly Supporting Families NZ) Chief Operations Officer John Moore is excited the show is coming to Auckland.

“We are all acutely aware of the very concerning suicide statistics in New Zealand in recent years and the growing concern around mental health services,” Mr Moore says.

“To be able to bring this show to Auckland is a real privilege and much needed. Different people need different tools in their toolbox to address their mental illness and if this amazing show inspires someone to do something different or get some help for themselves or a family member, that will be extremely worthwhile.”

The show has toured New Zealand and achieved outstanding reviews. The aim is to shine the light on depression and offer hope as well as tools for those fighting the same battle, in a safe environment.

The show runs for approximately 70 minutes and is followed by a 20-minute discussion with the audience.

Tea, coffee and light refreshments follow.

Shows are by koha or donation.
