Trekkers take in Smedley Station

-

A horse trek taking in the stunning countryside of Smedley Station’s Baker’s Block this Saturday will once again raise funds for the Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Property Brokers in Waipukurau have been organising the annual event since 2011. Organiser Jo Bonner said 64 riders took part last year and each trek had raised an average of $2000 for the Cancer Society.

“This is a unique opportunity to ride on Smedley Station and we are privileged to be allowed on this property. It provides a ride across stunning country side and magic views across CHB,” Jo said.

The four-hour trek covers 26km of farm tracks, native bush, and stream crossings and provides views to the Ruahine Ranges and down to the plains below.

Jo said after two hours, riders stopped for lunch at an historic shepherd’s hut before returning on a different scenic trail.

“We are riding farm tracks and hills as we head into the ranges, so a good level of fitness for both horse and rider is required, so it’s more suitable for riders who are confident in mixed terrain,” she said.

Riders could ride at their own pace as the course was well-marked, she said, but there was also a trek leader and a rider at the end to give a guide if needed.

On returning to Bakers Block, Jo said her Property Brokers team would be ready and waiting with a sausage sizzle and raffles to purchase, which had been donated by local businesses.

“It always ends with lots of happy faces, tales of their adventures during the day and the horses having earned a well-deserved carrot,” said Jo.

The trek costs $30 per rider. For tickets call 858 7280 or email waipukurau@propertybrokers.co.nz The trek sets off at 10am sharp on Saturday April 1 from the Smedley Station Baker’s Block on Makaroro Rd off SH2.
