Try new ways for some tasks

- BY MICHELLE TURFREY Partner atCrowe Horwath

The changing world we live in can feel hard to keep up with.

Knowing your industry, whether it is farming or any other business activity is no longer enough.

Theworld is changing and becoming more complicated, competitive, computerised and legislated.

But don’t feel defeated. Doing things differently is not something to be afraid of but is an opportunity to improve your knowledge and performance. Being innovative can be as simple is choosing to focus on one aspect of your business to do really well.

It’s that attitude of striving to do things in a betterway that can give you a competitive advantage. Encouraging your staff to have that same attitude can be challenging, but in the end it will make your business truly innovative and sustainable.

Adopting new technologies is a one way of being innovative. You can’t avoid it, so you should embrace it. Who would have predicted that we would have drones doing tasks on farms and remote-controlled helicopters establishing crops and new pasture on hill country that couldn’t be cultivated?

There are real benefits in efficiency and performance if you use cloud accounting and task-specific apps. These help you make more timely and accurate decisions. Newtechnology allows you to measure results. When we teach our clients some of the clever ways to analyse data from their cloud accounting system they are able to monitor, benchmark and plan their future actions muchmore reliably.

Add to that the ability to ensure you meet your compliance obligations through technology and you aresaving yourself time, stress and money. Initially, an app or online can seem daunting but we find it’s like any tool— once you know what it can achieve and how to work it for your best outcomes you instantly see how it can help with a range of compliance tasks from accounting, budgeting, health and safety, nutrient budgeting, production planning, strategy and growth.

Weworkwith farmers and business people who are choosing to be innovative by facing their fears and using the technology. We’ve seen the improved results in their business and personal lives. Remember, you don’t have to know it all, just be willing to try something new.
