Thieves make off with cigarettes

Police are hunting two thieves who made off with cigarettes after an early morning breakin at Waipukurau’s New World supermarket last Friday.

Apolice spokesman said two males broke into the store through a fire exit door at about 2.30am on Friday. Security staff arrived within minutes, but not before the men made off with an unknown quantity of cigarettes after exiting the same way.

New World Waipukurau owner Gerard Kennedy said the break-in was “extremely disappointing” but the damage was quickly cleared and it was “business as usual” on Friday. “Our security company was on the scene with in minutes and we’re relieved that no one was injured.

“The police investigation is ongoing, and so we’re not able to comment any further,” he said.

The police spokesman said therewas nothing to suggest that supermarket night-fill staff were inside the store at the time of the break in.

Police were reviewing security footage and making inquiries to find those responsible, he said.
