Pupils net basketball skills
Central Hawke’s Bay school pupils grabbed the opportunity to learn a few extra basketball skills from some of the best recently.
More than 350 children from across CHB spent some time learning basketball skills from players from the Taylor Hawks, the region’s National Basketball League (NBL) team which plays out of Pettigrew Green Arena in Napier.
But last month, it was A.W. Parsons Stadium in Waipukurau that provided the ideal venue for local students to get active and interact with the Hawks, led by head coach Zico Coronal.
Students already involved in basketball were given the opportunity to develop their skills while novices were able to learn some of the basic fundamental movement skills. The focus was on fun, enjoyment and participation for all players.
Central Hawke’s Bay District Council supported the event, working with Epic Youth Ministries to provide lunch for the hungry students.
Council chief executive Monique Davidson was impressed with the number of students attending the session.
“It’s great to see opportunities like this happening in our local community, seeing young children getting active and learning something new. Today we might have sown the seed, and in a few years there may be some talented basketball players appearing in the Central Hawke’s Bay Sports Awards.”
