Barefoot 7s a day of fun and rugby

Ter­race School and Waipawa Pri­mary were CHB’s two rep­re­sen­ta­tives at the an­nual Barefoot 7s pri­mary school rugby tour­na­ment held at Hast­ings Boys’ High late last month.

Waipawa en­tered three teams in var­i­ous weight di­vi­sions at the May 24 tour­na­ment in Hast­ings, or­gan­ised by Park­vale School, while Ter­race sent a lone team in the un­der 60kg sec­tion.

Ter­race earned their place af­ter beat­ing Waipawa in the fi­nal of the CHB Barefoot sev­ens held at Taka­pau Rugby Club dur­ing the school hol­i­days.

Un­der coach Paora Reti, Ter­race lost its open­ing round robin game against Waipawa but then won ev­ery game af­ter that, against Waipuku­rau, Flem­ing­ton and Taka­pau.

They then met Waipawa once more in the fi­nal, this time win­ning in golden point time af­ter an in­di­vid­ual try to Eli Heremia.

HB Barefoot 7s or­gan­is­ers, Park­vale prin­ci­pal Mark Gifkins, said last month’s ma­jor tour­ney at Hast­ings Boys’ High in­volved 1590 chil­dren in 159 teams from 58 schools across the re­gion.

“No re­sults were kept by or­gan­is­ers, as the day was based around hav­ing fun and ex­pos­ing chil­dren to the thrill and en­joy­ment of play­ing rugby,” he said.
