Barefoot 7s a day of fun and rugby
Terrace School and Waipawa Primary were CHB’s two representatives at the annual Barefoot 7s primary school rugby tournament held at Hastings Boys’ High late last month.
Waipawa entered three teams in various weight divisions at the May 24 tournament in Hastings, organised by Parkvale School, while Terrace sent a lone team in the under 60kg section.
Terrace earned their place after beating Waipawa in the final of the CHB Barefoot sevens held at Takapau Rugby Club during the school holidays.
Under coach Paora Reti, Terrace lost its opening round robin game against Waipawa but then won every game after that, against Waipukurau, Flemington and Takapau.
They then met Waipawa once more in the final, this time winning in golden point time after an individual try to Eli Heremia.
HB Barefoot 7s organisers, Parkvale principal Mark Gifkins, said last month’s major tourney at Hastings Boys’ High involved 1590 children in 159 teams from 58 schools across the region.
“No results were kept by organisers, as the day was based around having fun and exposing children to the thrill and enjoyment of playing rugby,” he said.
