Proud anniversary performance
The Tui Maddison Trophy third round encounter between Northfuels Central team and Taradale Rugby and Sports was the feature game of the Central club's 25th anniversary and club day celebrations at Waipukurau's Central Park.
The Central side wore the team's original harlequin jerseys. The commemorative jerseys, the same as in the club's first game in 1994, were auctioned after the game as a fundraiser for the club.
All 22 jerseys were auctioned off at the after-match function and this raised $19,150 for the club. One jersey sold for $2000.
Although the premier team lost 20-19 through a last-second try and the premier reserves lost 20-8 to Taradale premier team, manager Ian Large said they were two good games appropriate to the occasion.
“We were gutted with the loss but proud of the performance. There was so much belief out there,” Central manager Ian Large said.
Central did well to establish a 19-3 lead at halftime. Captain and lock Tom Parsons scored two tries and was named the player of the match.
Veteran winger Mark Donald scored the other try.
Blindside flanker Jason Cutbush, in his 50th and blazer game for the hosts, and No8 Warwick Slingsby, who has played more than 200 games, also contributed well.
