Proud an­niver­sary per­for­mance

The Tui Mad­di­son Tro­phy third round en­counter be­tween North­fu­els Cen­tral team and Taradale Rugby and Sports was the fea­ture game of the Cen­tral club's 25th an­niver­sary and club day cel­e­bra­tions at Waipuku­rau's Cen­tral Park.

The Cen­tral side wore the team's orig­i­nal har­lequin jer­seys. The commemorative jer­seys, the same as in the club's first game in 1994, were auc­tioned af­ter the game as a fundraiser for the club.

All 22 jer­seys were auc­tioned off at the af­ter-match func­tion and this raised $19,150 for the club. One jersey sold for $2000.

Al­though the premier team lost 20-19 through a last-sec­ond try and the premier re­serves lost 20-8 to Taradale premier team, man­ager Ian Large said they were two good games ap­pro­pri­ate to the oc­ca­sion.

“We were gut­ted with the loss but proud of the per­for­mance. There was so much be­lief out there,” Cen­tral man­ager Ian Large said.

Cen­tral did well to es­tab­lish a 19-3 lead at half­time. Cap­tain and lock Tom Par­sons scored two tries and was named the player of the match.

Vet­eran winger Mark Donald scored the other try.

Blind­side flanker Ja­son Cut­bush, in his 50th and blazer game for the hosts, and No8 Warwick Slingsby, who has played more than 200 games, also con­trib­uted well.
