Pair visit Pukehou

-

It may be wet and wintry but that hasn't kept Pukehou School children from engaging in exciting learning opportunities over the last few weeks.

The school was extremely lucky to have author Tim Tipene and illustrator Heather Hunt visit the school recently as part of the Storylines Story Tour for 2018. The senior students were captivated by Tim's storytelling while the junior school were enthralled with Heather and the delights of illustrating, turning their own hands to the task.

With the school relaunching itself as an Enviro School, the 11 pupils from the school's Enviro Group headed to Simon and Lou White's Kanapu hemp seed oil farm, to begin a riparian planting project as part of the drive for more sustainable farming practices.

New Pukehou principal Chris Birch and Enviro School lead teacher Jo Smith were joined by Kate Luff from Enviro Schools Hawke's Bay and Warrick Hesketh from the Hawke's Bay Regional council to plant the native trees with parent volunteers.

“Everyone had a great time planting and slipping and sliding in the muddy conditions. The group plan on going back in the spring to locate the trees and check on their progress.”

He said Pukehou was extremely excited to be refocusing on its Enviro status with the students and staff engaging in sustainable learning projects and practices, both at the school and in the wider community.
