Blaze fought for 30 hours

CHB Mail - - Rally Raises $2600 -

Firefighters and a helicopter with a monsoon bucket fought a fire for nearly 30 hours after a logging clearup at Hatuma got out of control on Labour Weekend.

Hawke’s Bay principal rural fire officer Trevor Mitchell said they were called to the 3.5ha site on Maharakeke Rd, Hatuma, about 11.30am on Saturday, October 20.

“The owner was burning piles of logging waste and the wind got up and the fire piles escaped.”

He said it was fairly common at this time of year when people didn’t look at the weather forecast.

“He did let the emergency services know he was burning before he lit, so he did all the right things,” Mitchell said.

He urged people to check the weather forecast and that old fires were “properly out”.
