Pakeke Centre to launch website

-

CHB’s Pakeke Centre this year celebrates 20 years of service to elderly and socially isolated CHB residents.

This month they will go live with a new website, designed to help families, friends or caregivers who are looking for information on keeping older hands and minds active and engaged.

Centre co-ordinator Janette Birdsall says the new website is one example of how the organisation is continually moving forward in its outlook, while helping some of the region’s most elderly residents.

Pakeke operates under the Anglican Care, Waiapu and is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am until 3pm and in that time clients join in activities including crafts, entertainment, guest speakers, outings and interactive games.

There is morning tea with locally-famed fresh hot scones and clients also share a two-course lunch.

The sessions provide intellectual as well as physical stimulation for clients who may no longer be able to get out to social occasions on their own.

They also provide time out for carers.

Pakeke vans — driven by retired volunteers — provide free transport, picking clients up and taking them home again. The vans travel as far as Otane and Takapau to pick up clients for the day.

Pakeke clients are a part of CHB Activities, once a month joining in shared activities with Paul Hunter Centre, Woburn Home, Mt Herbert House and Pukeora Trust.

Scallywaggs childcare graduation class also visits Pakeke once a month for shared activities, which has been

beneficial for the clients and the children, says Jeanette.

“Scallywaggs’ feedback has been that the children develop an appreciation of spending time and learning alongside people of the older generation.

“Families and caregivers are very welcome to call in and visit us and see Pakeke Centre in operation. Our aim is to enhance your twilight years with fun, friendship and companionship, Jeanette says.

■ The Pakeke Centre is at 69 Porangahau Rd, Waipukurau, phone (06) 858 7682.
