Those perfect love songs

- By Brian Kelly

Ihope you had a happy Valentine’s Day last week. Do you and yours have a favourite love song? Maybe it’s the song you danced to at your wedding, or the song that was playing on the radio when you went out on your first date, or that special song you walked down the aisle to on the way to tieing the knot.

There are so many wonderfully romantic love songs around. In fact according to one website I visited it’s estimated more than 100 million love songs have been recorded.

Let’s face it we have been singing the praises of love since the early troubadours in the 12th century and maybe even before that.

So, just what is the greatest love song ever recorded?

That’s like asking a parent to name their favourite child.

So, a suggestion as to five of the best love songs. You may or may not agree though.

5 God Only Knows by The Beach

Boys. Released in 1966 on the album Pet Sounds. It’s probably best known from the movie Love

Actually but has also featured in several other movies and TV shows all with a love theme.

4 We’ve Only Just Begun by The

Carpenters. Funnily enough, this song written by Paul Williams

started out as a bank commercial in the US. Since its release in 1968 by Richard and Karen Carpenter, it became very popular at weddings.

3 My Love by Paul McCartney.

When Macca released this song in 1973, it was blasted for being overly sappy and sentimental. It went on to become one of the most famous and highly regarded love songs in the world.

2 Perfect by Ed Sheeran. Pure magic. The young pop star wrote this song for his girlfriend. Late in 2017 he teamed with Beyonce´ to record a version. My personal favourite is his duet with opera star Andrea Bocelli.

1 The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack.

Released in 1972, this song featured in the Clint Eastwood movie Play

Misty For Me and made Roberta Flack into a star. The song won Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Incredibly romantic.

I have only scratched the surface with so many artists recording wonderful love songs, from Adele to Boyz II Men, Savage Garden and Dusty Springfield, the list is endless.

What’s your favourite?
