Bucketload of help with recycling

-

“I do love the smell of a new trailer,” said Sustainable Ewe founder Neen Kennedy, who was able to stop bouncing with excitement just long enough to have her photo taken with the organisation’s shiny new mobile sustainability unit.

The covered and signwritten trailer has been funded by Central Hawke’s Bay District Council’s Environmental and Sustainability Fund, to help community groups in their bid to reduce waste going into landfills. The designated trailer will not only make it easier to transport recycled buckets to be turned into Bokashi composting kits, worm farms and chook feeders, but will serve as a onestop education hub, to share knowledge about the management of green waste, food waste and recycling.

Neen, who has been transporting up to 204 donated used buckets in her Rav 4, and packing it tightly with the repurposed buckets and recycling equipment to go to events, says having the trailer means “everything” and is a huge next step for the organisation. “I’m so excited. I have already signed up for Duck Day and will be organising to be at the Otane Market.

I also took the trailer to deliver Bokashi kits to the Environment Centre HB last week, which was a teeny-bit show-offy but I discovered I should be able to get 90 Bokashi kits on board.”

The trailer will be at many events around Central Hawke’s Bay and make forays into Tararua, with the items made from the repurposed recycled buckets for sale, pamphlets and advice on board and specialist recycling available. Neen is looking forward to using the new, far-more convenient mode of transport for the sustainability message.

“And it even has mag wheels!”
