Live a healthy life

-

Living a healthy life involves making daily choices to keep us fit-physically, mentally and spiritually. Eating well and taking regular exercise are two ways to achieve good health, along with not smoking cigarettes.

Choosing to adopt a healthier lifestyle and staying healthy helps prevent chronic diseases and reduces the chance of becoming ill or seriously injured. There are many factors influencing individual health such as our background, our environment, culture, education and so on. And, there are many things we can do as individuals, and collectively, to improve our overall health. Leading a healthy lifestyle is a personal choice, although there is support available which ranges from colleagues, to family members, organisations and the government all of whom can provide some additional assistance and motivation for people to make their own healthy choices.

There’s a huge focus on health and wellness these days which can be somewhat confusing especially when information comes from various sources and can be contradictory. On the other hand there is a growing awareness of alternative avenues to explore in the quest for wellness.

For those feeling bamboozled about health supplements or vitamins your local chemist is only too happy to advise what might be necessary and suitable. Quite often a healthy diet with exercise should negate the need for supplements.

Ongoing digestive issues or allergies can be investigated and there are several nutritionists and dietitians to consult with rather than putting up with nagging ailments and bad reactions to foodstuffs.

As we open our minds to what might have been considered alternative medicine years ago we find that there are plenty of options including the ancient art of acupuncture. Western medical professionals remain sceptical but there are plenty of Kiwi’s who find benefit from the various treatments offered by acupuncturists.

Eating healthy, nutritious food, exercising and doing breathing, meditation or other relaxation activities are reasonably easy methods for relieving stress. Taking up Pilates might be a way to reduce stress while doing low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility.

To keep stress to a minimum, design a meal plan for the day that incorporates a big meal in the morning, something relatively light for lunch and another light meal in the evening. Salad before your evening meal with fruit and yoghurt to follow will satisfy your appetite.
