Club puts offerings to fore

-

The Waipukurau Golf Club is holding an open day on Sunday, May 29.

It is the only 18-hole golf course in Central Hawke’s Bay and in recent years work has gone into improving the course, greens and facilities.

The club can now boast that CHB has a top-class golf course on our doorstep — but it is an under-utilised community asset and could be used far more for the benefit of the people of the region, says club member and keen golfer Steve Wyn-Harris.

“All sports benefit mental and physical wellbeing as well as providing entertainment and an opportunity to mix with others.

“Golf is trickier than it should be, but the handicapping system allows beginners and hackers to play competitively with better golfers which is a leveller that few other sports can offer,” Steve says.

The club’s open day starts at 1pm and aims to encourage golfers, exgolfers, aspiring golfers and those who may never have lifted a golf club to make the 8km drive from Waipukurau to the course to enjoy a hit.

“If you are already a golfer, grab some mates, or we can pair you up with others and you can have nine or 18 holes at no cost to see for yourself what great shape the course is in,” Steve says.

“Then afterwards join us for a well deserved drink at the clubhouse.

“If you are an absolute beginner or needing some help, we will have free lessons and some tips and take you out for a few holes.

“Families and children are more than welcome.

“Who knows, this might be the start of a career and you could become the next generation’s Lydia Ko or Ryan Fox. Or more likely it might become a sport that will challenge and entertain you for decades to come.”
