New green opened at Waipawa club

-

A fine and sunny Central Hawke’s Bay day provided the perfect conditions for the August 21 official opening of the Waipawa Bowling Club’s newly laid Fieldturf NZ bowling surface.

Waipawa Sports Club president Chalky White congratulated the bowling club on its initiative to replace the older surface laid in 2008, and wished members well for the future.

Waipawa Bowling Club president Marie Allerby welcomed 64 visiting bowlers from 10 of the 12 bowling clubs in Hawke’s Bay, members of the Dannevirke BC and approximately 30 Waipawa members and friends to a colourful celebration of their new green and surrounds, complete with new rink markers and numbers, and freshly painted fence.

The club has been operating for 118 years and is one of the smaller clubs in the Bowls Hawke’s Bay family and proud to be offering a topclass bowling surface to Waipawa and the wider community.

Patron Jill Hern, life members Elza Hunter and Gordon Watts, major sponsor Bruce Stephenson and special guest Central Hawke’s Bay District councillor Pip Burne bowled up to placed jacks, and Pip cut the official ribbon.

All bowlers then took part in a special Spider for prizes, followed by fours play for 64 bowlers. Every team received a prize and afternoon tea and raffles followed.

There many positive comments on the new surface, and with another “stretch” scheduled shortly, the club anticipates a successful season ahead.

The Waipawa Bowling Club is happy to welcome new members.
