Beware sea lice
A family who went swimming at the Otahu Estuary last Friday went home with hundreds of sea lice bites. The reader said they “suffered big time” and an antihistamine cream was their only option for relief. Others reported on Coastal News’ Facebook page that the sea lice were widespread — at Waihi Beach, Whiritoa and Whangamata wharf — and were believed to be microscopic jellyfish. The Late Bloomers Awards have been announced. Waihi Kindergarten (Inspired Kindergartens and Home Based Education) took out the Late Bloomers Tallest Sunflower Award in the 2017 Daltons Sunflowers in Kindergartens project with their sunflower plant measuring 3.28 metres — the tallest grown in the history of the competition. Central Kids Te Kuiti Kindergarten (Central Kids Kindergartens Association) won the Late Bloomers Widest Sunflower Head Award with a 47cm wide head.
