Local source earthquakes — what you need to know

Coastal News - - News -

Don’t wait for an official warning; move immediately to the nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible.

■ Know your route. Check out https:/ /www.civildefence.govt.nz/get-ready/get-tsunami-ready/

■ Practise your route. The New Zealand Shakeout earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi is a great opportunity to do this. Practise your evacuation on foot or bike https:/ /www.tcdc.govt.nz/thames-valley-emergencymanagement/

■ Stay informed. Warnings and evacuation maps will be issued via Emergency Mobile Alerts, news media, the Civil Defence website, @Nzcivildefence Twitter and Nzcivildefence Facebook.

■ Plan ahead if needing help. Make arrangements to help you evacuate if in need.

■ Hikoi not convoy. Run, walk or cycle when evacuating from a tsunami to avoid traffic jams.

■ Have a grab bag ready with food, water, clothes and a battery powered radio.
