If you are up for some silly fun for a seriously good cause — the third annual Scoot 4 Loot 50cc Charity Scooter Ride is on December 1, leaving Whangamata¯ at 7.30am.

This year the group is raising funds for Youthline to help run a Teen Suicide Support Programme in Whangamata¯ . Previous beneficiaries have been Prostate NZ and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with 35 riders making the 210km ride around the Peninsula last year. A Facebook page has been set up at www.face where people can register to be a rider or make a sponsorship donation, and the page will be updated during the day as the ride progresses.

“We want riders to dress up in costumes for the day as this always adds a bit of fun to it, and there are some spot prizes awarded at the end of the ride, which finishes in Whangamata¯ ,” says spokesman Noddy Watts. “There’s even a rider from the USA returning for the second time as he had such a great time last year.”

“I’ve lived on the Peninsula most of my life, but this is the best way to see the scenery as we are travelling so much slower than when you travel by car. You can relax and take it all in and I’ve seen things I’ve never seen by car.” Anyone wanting to join the ride is invited to meet at the Good George Pop Up Bar in Whangamata¯ on Thursday 22 November at 5pm for a briefing and pay registration of $30 per rider.

A support crew will follow riders in case of a breakdown or emergency.

Noddy says safety is paramount and consideration is given to other vehicles, however their patience is appreciated as it was a worthwhile cause.
