The Onemana Surf Life Saving Club’s volunteer guards had to draw on all their training during the weekend with a two person rescue at Pokohino Beach on Saturday followed up with assisting in a house fire at Onemana late on Sunday.

A two man crew of Finn Smith and Conner Mcleay took the club‘s IRB and made the 15 minute journey to Pokohino beach where two people were caught in a rip. By the time they arrived after a quick search of the sea the two were spotted on a small sandy cove surrounded by rocks.

In the meantime the Emergency Call Out Squad (ECOS) from Whangamata was notified and picked up an ECOS member from the Onemana Club.

The Onemana team had waited for the tide to recede as the younger of the two being rescued did not want to go back into the water. The pair were eventually able to walk to safety.

On Sunday, just as the Onemana SLSC patrol was packing up, a house close to the beach was on fire.

The patrol, along with members of the public, attempted to control the fire. The club members then went door knocking to alert the neighbouring residents. When the Whangamata Fire Brigade arrived the surf club members assisted the fire brigade as requested in moving items and hoses.
