Over summer I do like heading out on day trips around the Auckland region for a good old-fashioned picnic. Preferred locations feature a bush walk and a waterfall. Sadly, a lot of the tracks around Auckland are closed due to the threat to our majestic kauri trees, but there are still some good spots around. Essentials to take include: a good picnic blanket (I love this handcrafted vintage kantha quilt made from scraps of old saris from Exotic Imports); Dreamscape hemp pillowcases by House of Aroha from The Poi Room, perfect for an afternoon kip; a Fab Slab board to serve up some choice snacks; The Drunken Nanny fresh lush goat’s cheese and some hot salami from Salash Delicatessan in Hobsonville Point. Something to keep the drinks cold... crucial. So, grab a Stanley beer growler from Everyday Needs and a fan to keep the breeze moving from Otara markets. You know you shouldn’t still be clogging up the ocean and killing marine life with discarded plastic bottles, so fill up a stainless steel bottle like this one from Sistema. Poetry is a new discovery for me that I am in the early throes of exploring. I recently came across these great little local publications from indie publisher, Compound Press. It’s not quite Déjeuner sur l’herbe (I wouldn’t call myself a Francophile), but it’s a great set for some summer lazing.
