Cuisine

It’s simply the best. Let me tell you why...

- KELLI BRETT, EDITOR, CUISINE

As we head into that time of year when (for most of us) a bit of rest and relaxation is firmly in sight, I hope that you will find the time to pause, have a good read and be inspired by the passion, the creativity and the beauty that we have gathered for you in this cracker of an issue.

It’s simply the best. Let me tell you why...

As our stunning cover suggests, really good tomatoes don’t need much; a slug of good olive oil, a sprinkle of salt and pepper and you are in tomato heaven. With that in mind, Ginny Grant has created a collection of tomato recipes that will give you a taste of summer in each and every bite, and Will Bowman and Jane Lyons have taken on another summer superhero to invent recipes using corn that are absolutely packed with the colour, smell and taste of the season in which it thrives. Fiona Smith has dished up a selection of summer fruits, ice creams and sorbets designed to cool the hottest summer evenings and Emma Galloway has produced a spread that gives you everything you need to head out for the perfect picnic. Not to be outdone, Martin Bosley was so intent on taking superb Waikato beef to new barbecued heights that he nearly burned his house down. (True story).

All you need now is a chilled glass of rosé in hand and we have some popping pinks that will definitely make you want to kick off your shoes and wriggle your toes in the sand; if sauvignon blanc is more your thing we’ve brought out the big guns with some of the best that Cuisine wine chair Ben Glover and our expert wine panel have ever tasted over on page 128.

THE BEST. We approach every recipe, every story, every snippet of news, every tasting with a desire to bring you the very best. We want you to know that when you support us by picking up a copy of Cuisine or reading, listening or watching our digital content you are helping us to continue to tell the stories of the people who are driving the food and drink story of Aotearoa in a direction that will make us all proud.

OK, so 2020 was not the best. We’ve weathered immense challenges but the silver lining is that we’ve learned that we are more resilient than perhaps we thought. Now we deserve to spoil ourselves and have a little fun. So, as we say farewell to the year that none of us are likely to ever forget, we bring you our Cuisine 100 Tastes of New Zealand – a spotlight on the clever people and the unique flavours that make our lives in this extraordinary country so delicious. We hope that this spectacular list of beautiful places, things and people will help you fill the year ahead with endless possibilities...

Let’s make it the best.
