FUTURE OF FISHING

Karl Warr of Better Fishing in Napier has been working with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research to limit bycatch on his boat in a project that could be a New Zealand-born solution to a global problem. “Trawling is fairly indiscriminate,” he told 1 NEWS from his fishing vessel. He’s working with NIWA, with Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment funding, to develop a selective underwater system. Cameras are attached to a trawling net with a gate and controlled from onboard. As fish are caught, they can be released if they’re not a targeted species.
