THREE DECADES OF INNOVATION

-

This year marks a significant milestone for Wedgelock Equipment Limited as they commemorate 30 years of designing and manufacturing couplers and attachments under their Wedgelock company banner. However, their history with the New Zealand civil construction industry goes back much further.

In 1987, nestled in their modest Kāpiti Coast workshop, the Calvert family could not have predicted that a prototype excavator coupler for a family friend’s excavator would eventually turn into an opportunity to form a company seven years later, one that now exports its products worldwide.

Today, Wedgelock Equipment is still operated by the Calverts and remains 100% Kiwi-owned.

Now based in a large Upper Hutt facility, the business has a large team of staff, which includes 10 design engineers solely dedicated to developing new product.

From heavy steel fabricators making couplers for 100-tonne machines to state-of-the-art robotic welders capable of 24/7 production, Wedgelock has come a long way from their humble beginnings. With containers of product awaiting to ship to overseas customers, their reach extends far beyond the shores of New Zealand.

Talking about the company’s future, Wedgelock’s chief operating officer, Alex Kelly, says, “We have new products being released this year that will significantly make an excavator operator’s workday both easier and safer.

“A key focus of our development team is to make products that are smart and reliable while being the absolute safest on the market — our new product releases are all of those things.”

Wedgelock will be showcasing some of their new innovative products at New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays in Mystery Creek this year.
