Reliable motor-drive unit with integrated recording of operating data

Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR) is the global market leader for power transformer control with tap changers. A key component for reliable operation of the tap changer is the Tapmotioned motor-drive unit, which has been installed over 100,000 times since its 1997 launch. The new Tapmotioned ISM combines state-of-the-art automation solutions with reliable drive technology.

The Tapmotioned ISM is fitted with ISM technology developed by MR. ISM – Integrated Smart Module -– is the new standardised hardware and software platform used for all MR automation solutions. It particularly suits the special conditions in the electrical energy technology field.

It ensures reliable operation of the on-load tap-changer enabling all relevant operating data of the power transformer to be analysed and recorded, including monitoring of the tap changer, temperatures, signals from the motor-drive unit and the status of the protective devices and evaluating transformer utilisation.

Data can be transferred directly to the control system using IEC 61850-compliant methods, reducing the amount of wiring needed during installation and cutting costs over a conventional connection method. An integrated web server displays the data negating the need to install additional software packages for visualisation and parameterisation. The values measured by the ISM are encrypted and can be accessed anywhere using all standard web browsers. This means increased operational reliability allowing early detection of incidents and fast diagnosis of errors. Costs are also reduced as maintenance work is done in a targeted manner based on the condition of the system. With a large transformer f leet and sites spread over an extensive area, the intelligent motor-drive unit saves a lot of travelling and valuable work time.

The Tapmotioned ISM motor-drive unit is a cost-effective, practice-oriented solution easing both operational management and asset management. The modular design allows the system to be extended to suit individual needs, and equipment can be adapted to future tasks. ISM provides the foundation for integrated monitoring of transformers with the TESSA f leet monitoring system meaning relevant people have a clear overview of all data at all times – whether a single transformer or an entire f leet. ISM can be retrofitted quickly and easily on all existing Tapmotioned motor-drive units directly in the motordrive unit or in a separate control cabinet.
