Corrosion: a metal’s nemesis

-

As the old saying goes…“Don’t mix metals.” As a general rule of thumb, this is true to avoid galvanic corrosion, but there is more to the story; did you know even stainless can corrode in six different ways?

Sometimes using metal is desirable and sometimes it’s unavoidable, but Igus ® plastics are replacing metal components with corrosion-free plastic alternatives. What started with polymer plain bearings has grown to now include rod- ends, pillow block bearings, flange bearings, roller bearings and more! There are even over 50 different material types to ensure there is a material suitable for your requirements.

The high- performance polymers are even available as sheet and bar stock so that you can machine to your heart’s content.

New Igus ® plastic innovations are released frequently and existing products such as energy chain are still being continually developed and improved.

Not only are Igus ® corrosion-free, but they are also lighter, lubrication free, maintenance free, and have reduced wear on shafts.

With no lubrication or maintenance required like a metal bearing, Igus bearings are set and forget.

The service life for most Igus ® products is predictable thanks to the huge scale of testing Igus ® perform on their products to ensure peak performance and optimal running characteristics.

Struggling to find a replacement for an old worn out and corroded metal component? Igus ® now offers 3D printing – simply upload a drawing to igus.co.nz or contact Automation Equipment NZ and we’ll do the rest, it couldn’t be any easier than that.
