Founder of Momentum Life Coaching & Training, Vivienne Kelly, says that over her 20 years in Professional Coaching, the growth of the profession has been profound.

Successful people use coaching to gain more success and fulfilment in their personal and professional lives - whatever ‘personal interpretation’ that may be; ranging from relationships to financial success. Life coaching is about living on purpose, with purpose.

How is coaching different from counselling / therapy?

Vivienne explains that one of the key differences, is that coaching works from present into future.

‘‘Where are you now and where do you want to be? How can we work together to get you there?’’ and ‘‘How can the journey itself also be fulfilling?’’ A coach uses a combination of communication skills, processes and tools to assist the client to gain clarity, identify possibilities, and design an action plan; moving them forward towards the results they want. Sometimes, working out what they want comes first!

Counselling often works from present into past; processing, analysing, healing. Sometimes it is more appropriate for someone to deeply process and heal the past before being fully able to focus on creating an inspiring future.

Who would benefit from coach training?

Not everyone who does the training wants to be an actual coach. It’s beneficial for a range of professionals like managers, educators, medical professionals, salespeople - basically any profession which requires inter-personal interaction.

The people who have enjoyed the training since 2007, have come from all walks of life. If you work with people, have family and friends, enjoy personal and professional development; and want to make a positive impact, this course is a winner. The communication skills, tools and different ways of thinking enhance most careers and personal lives.

How are the courses structured?

As Vivienne has a background in education and psychology, she understands the importance of experiential learning. For example, if you are actively involved, as opposed to just reading or listening, the learning is richer and permanent. The courses are made up of one four-hour class per week for 12 to 16 weeks (choice of face-to-face or Live Zoom). They are discussion-oriented and have a practical focus. The weekly structure allows the participants to pace, process and apply the new knowledge in their ‘usual’ life before adding the next layer…

For those people that want to become coaches, Vivienne highly recommends choosing a coaching niche. She laughs and says, ‘‘I don’t recommend calling yourself a life coach – it’s too vague and fluffy. Choosing a specialist niche makes more sense to people and it is clearer what you offer.’’

Momentum offers the Foundation / Advanced in Professional Coaching which is generic and can be used for any coaching niche. They also have a Professional Health Coaching Programme.
