Jade waves goodbye to long locks

Eastern Courier - - News - By SIMON SMITH

Twelve-year-old Jade Fairweather has long hair today but it will be gone tomorrow.

The Bucklands Beach Intermediate student’s head will be shaved bare to raise $1160 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.

She says her friends support her participation in this year’s Shave for a Cure, but they wouldn’t do it themselves.

‘‘Lots of people in my family have either died with cancer or are living with cancer, so I wanted to help out a bit.’’

Jade decided to shave her hair off for charity three weeks ago and since then sponsorship has poured in.

‘‘My mum put it on her Facebook and my dad as well and all of their friends sent emails to all of their friends.’’

Her father David says Jade participates rather than sits on the sidelines.

‘‘She’s independent in her choices so when she decides to do something she’s going to go out and do it.’’

Her hair would take three years to grow back to its present 50cm length, he says.
