FQ fashion editor Danielle Clausen takes the Huawei P20 Pro on location in picturesque Wanaka
As a fashion editor there’s nothing I love more than a beautiful photograph — except maybe an on-the-ball assistant to help me on set. Lucky for me, the Huawei P20 Pro and its 40MP camera ticked both of those boxes, as I discovered when I headed to Wanaka to style a 12-page winter tailoring editorial for this issue of Fashion Quarterly.
DAY ONE
2pm: We pack into our accommodation after an hour-long drive through the beautiful Crown Range from Queenstown Airport.
3pm: Time to hit the road with the crew and location scout for tomorrow’s shoot. The
P20 Pro’s high ISO sensitivity and triple Leica camera are superior to the P10, making snapping quality shots on the go even easier.
7pm: With our locations locked in, I get to steaming two suitcases full of looks and then snap away a reference shot of each of the 10 outfits — so I don’t forget any details while
I’m on location tomorrow.
DAY TWO
8am: Rise and shine! Time to match up outfit shots with specific location shots from yesterday. First stop: Lake Hāwea.
11am: With shooting underway, I keep a note of which garments and accessories are used in each look. I’ll later turn these details into garment credits that run alongside the shoot. Who needs an assistant, right?
12pm: Time to check in with the boss. I use the P20 Pro to send pictures of how the frames are looking to my editor — giving the photographer’s DSLR camera a run for its money while I’m at it.
2pm: We relocate to our second location for the day, Beacon Point.
4pm: The poplar trees are the most beautiful shade of yellow at this time of year, so I can’t help but capture some behind-the-scenes shots for the Fashion Quarterly Instagram account.
6pm: It’s a wrap! The crew capture a team selfie using the P20 Pro’s
24MP front-facing camera.
