FLORAL FANCY

-

Three florists share their picks for 2019’s most snap-worthy bouquet trends.

1. TEXTURAL AND ASYMMETRIC

“With this trend, look to strong colours, fresh clean whites and greens, or soft tones of pastels with hints of colour for interest, depending on your style. Bouquet shapes can have a little movement or be more tailored but are always textural and asymmetric in form; overly wild florals have been pushed aside as modern brides are after a more chic look. Hero flowers would be Phalaenopsis orchids and anthuriums, and of course roses, as they are available in so many stunning tones. Proteas are a real treat for winter brides.” – Kelly Karam, owner of Blush in Auckland. @blush_flowers | blush.co.nz

2. PETITE AND MEANINGFUL

“My best friend got married in November and for her I did a ‘small by today’s standards’ bouquet; the bridesmaids carried sweetpeas. I think, if something is so delicate and lovely, why mess with it? It would be great to see a movement back towards these smaller, more humble bouquets filled with delicate, meaningful flowers. A bride’s bouquet should be a reflection of her and the things she holds dear. Flowers from her childhood or that evoke a beautiful memory, gently arranged in a loose, natural style. The roses in Claire’s bouquet were cut from the garden of her family home; the others were gathered from local flower farms.” – Liv Wakem, owner of Kensal Flower Studio in Auckland. @kensal_flowers | kensal.nz

3. LOCAL AND SEASONAL

“We’ve been focused for years on buying locally and in season in regards to food, but now it’s time to think about the flowers; New Zealand is blessed with some fine growers. When working with your wedding florist, let them know you want to support New Zealand’s flower industry. Reducing travel time results in a higher-quality flower, and seasonal flowers and foliage often show a colour gradient that is a bit more special.” – Shaye Woolford, owner of On My Hand Styling & Flora in Tauranga. @onmyhand | onmyhand.co.nz
