Quick ideas for an Italian dessert

Affogato is one of the simplest desserts you can get; a quick and easy way to finish a meal on a sweet note. It’s essentially just a couple of scoops of vanilla icecream covered in strong coffee – hence the name, which translates from Italian as ‘drowned’.

While we hesitate to mess with such a classic, this is a dish that with a few twists takes on a whole new level of interest to deliver a taste explosion. The coffee can be enhanced with liqueur, or swapped for child-friendly hot chocolate or even tea, and you can also experiment with different flavours of icecream. SOME OF OUR FAVOURITES ARE: ● Hazelnut delight Pour 1 tablespoon of Frangelico over each bowl of icecream before adding coffee; finish with a sprinkle of crushed hazelnuts.

● Salted caramel Pour 1 tablespoon of Baileys or Amaretto over 2 scoops of salted caramel icecream; add coffee and top with chocolate shavings.

● Chocolate kids’ dream Swap the coffee for hot chocolate, which is poured over the vanilla icecream. Top with marshmallows and coloured sprinkles.

● Chai and honey melt Drizzle some runny honey over vanilla icecream, then add freshly brewed chai tea.
