Speakers prove popular target for local thieves

- SENIOR SERGEANT STEPHEN RICHARDS

In the last few weeks we have had speakers stolen from different premises around the Pukekohe area. We suspect the speakers are either being sold on social media or used by young people on their bicycles.

This week I want to talk about the theft of loud speaker and public address speakers.

I did talk about this not so long ago - however we are still seeing a good number of these thefts occurring in and around our area. These are the loud, hailer-type speakers that are used at schools and sports grounds.

In the last few weeks we have had several of these stolen from different premises around the Pukekohe area.

This is very frustrating for the victims of this crime because some of them suffer quite a lot of damage from the act of pulling them off the wall and the cost of replacing them is high. We suspect the speakers are either being sold on social media or used by young people on their bicycles.

They are attaching them to wooden boards which they then attach to their bicycles. They then wire them up to their phones and play music while riding around. This ‘craze’ is occurring right across Auckland.

There would be very few if any legitimate ways that young people could get their hands on these so if you see people out and about with them on their bicycles or even just sitting around the town square playing music through them we would be interested in speaking to them. So give us a call and we will come and speak to them because it is highly likely the speakers have been stolen.

A lot of people are out and about playing the new game Pokemon Go. I just want to remind you when you are out and about playing the game to stay safe. This week we had some people who were playing the game out and about in the town centre were approached and threatened. Thankfully these people had the sense to recognise what was happening and leave before they came to any harm.

So have fun while out and about playing the game but to prevent yourself becoming a potential victim, remember there is safety in numbers, use your commonsense and don’t go into unlit areas at night or anywhere that may put you in danger.
