School holidays always a busy time for police

- SENIOR SERGEANT DEAN BORRELL

‘‘Parents please know what your kids are doing. Don’t leave them to wander unsupervised all day, ’idle hands make for the devil’s work’.’’

School holidays start next week and unfortunately it can be a busy time for the police.

We find that schools and educational premises get hit by burglaries during this time.

Equipment like school computers are a target, disappointedly often it’s because someone left a window open or a door unlocked making it very easy for offenders to get in.

So could anyone who’s has a connection to their local school please ensure it’s well locked up for the two weeks, maybe even valuables like laptops are secured out of sight or off site.

If you see people on the school grounds it could be worth phoning the police on 111 if you think they may be up to no good, especially at night.

It would be perfect if someone in each school had a last look over the place-double checking security.

At night schools are patrolled by security firms, our community patrols and police but most of the time the community are our eyes and ears.

Another issues can be an increase in disorder in our towns and shoplifting with all the young people about.

We will increase our focus in these areas, particularly foot patrols.

Retailers might want to consider having more staff on or at least being extra vigilant.

On shoplifting, if you do see a theft happening or someone running away don’t be afraid to tell staff in the shop or even intervene if it’s safe.

You could help by phoning us on 111 to say you are following a thief and keep them in sight until we arrive.

Also burglaries and thefts from cars during the day can rise during school holidays.

As always lock it, secure or hide any valuables.

Parents please know what your kids are doing. Don’t leave them to wander unsupervised all day, ‘idle hands make for the devil’s work’.

There are several holiday programmes available. Contact your school which can put you on to some, some are free.

Let’s hope the rain stops.
